I dunno, I keep hearing more and more reasons to not see this movie. That is, unless I have lots and lots of my friends around me and we MST3K it.

On the other hand, while I agree most of the great movies have an "epic" quality (namely, epic tragedy), I have a few movies near-and-dear to my heart that, while they have conflict, usually resolve to a resoundingly happy ending for all.

My best example for this is Groundhog day. Exceptionally good movie, wonderful twist, and by the end of the movie everyone seems better off as a result of the journey.

Couple thoughts.

1. Yes, landscape can be a character in the movie, but I think it's been done better (Werner Herzog is brilliant with this)

2. I don't think the movie was entirely faithful to the story. Namely, it's sanitized. The story was very gritty, and this movie was almost sanctimonious.

3. I think part of the brilliance (most likely unintentional) of not knowing what happens to Jack is that it shows how when gay people die, there is a bunch of covering up that goes on. You don't know because society isn't going to tell you.
