When you asked him what kept them together, he said he just "knew". Perhaps that's the only way to describe it, but I think it's a combination of life experiences, being there for someone, etc., not just the physical attraction, as he states it "was a two way street". Certainly a true testimony that loving relationships can last regardless of gender.
